Launch of the People’s Plan for the Teifi: A Community-Driven Vision for the Future
A bold new outline of community ambitions to protect and restore the River Teifi has been unveiled today with the launch of the People’s Plan for the Teifi. Developed with input from over 300 people within local communities, the plan sets out a shared vision for the river’s future—one that prioritises ecological health, sustainable management, and community involvement.
The River Teifi, one of Wales’ most iconic waterways, supports diverse wildlife, plays a role in local livelihoods, and holds deep cultural and historical significance. However, like many rivers, it faces increasing pressures from pollution, climate change, and unsustainable land use. The People’s Plan is a response to these challenges, offering a practical roadmap to safeguard the Teifi for generations to come.
“This is a plan built by the people, for the river,” said Harriet Alvis, CEO of West Wales Rivers Trust. “It reflects the knowledge, passion, ambitions and desires of those who live, work, and spend time along the Teifi, ensuring that its future is shaped by those who care most about its well-being.”
Key priorities outlined in the plan include:
- Increasing access to the river – Ensuring communities have safe places to access the river to increase community wellbeing and boost connection to the Teifi.
- Restoring water quality – Tackling pollution from agriculture, industry, and wastewater to improve biodiversity and public health.
- Protecting habitats and species – Enhancing the natural environment to support fish populations, birdlife, and plant species.
- Food and farming – Promoting responsible farming and support to farmers to enable this.
- Recognising culture and heritage – Encouraging local participation in conservation efforts and increasing awareness of the Teifi’s importance.
The plan has been developed through extensive consultation with local community members through online surveys and in-person events. To date, it represents the views of over 300 community members, and it is hoped that this number will continue to grow. It reflects a collective commitment to action, calling for stronger protections, targeted investment, and collaborative management of the river.
With the People’s Plan for the Teifi now in place, the focus shifts to implementation. Communities, businesses, and authorities are being urged to support the plan’s recommendations and take part in upcoming projects and initiatives.
