However, our rivers in West Wales are facing more issues than ever before. Shockingly, over 56% of rivers in West Wales failing to achieve ‘Good’ health under the 2021 Water Framework Directive. Furthermore, two of our Special Area of Conservation (SAC) rivers, the Teifi and the Cleddau, are exceeding phosphorus targets set by the regulator, and as such are at risk of serious ecological decline as excess levels cause excessive growth of algae, which smothers and blocks out light for other aquatic plants and animals.

Our rivers are facing threats from all sides – habitat destruction is regularly occurring without consent, pollution is happening on a constant basis from a range of urban and rural sources, and the implications of climate change are becoming increasingly evident.

There is a greater need than ever for Rivers Trusts to strengthen its capacity to work across, and bring together, the diverse sectors that are represented within river catchments, in order to prevent pollution wherever possible, as well as improve habitats and therefore the resilience of our rivers. That way, we may have a chance of protecting species such as our iconic Atlantic salmon, which have been officially classified as ‘at risk’.

You can explore the health of our rivers in the maps below:

· Series of ArcGIS storymaps (to be created during Catchment Plan)

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.21.0″
