AC DC: The Nutrient and Soil Management project, West Wales

We are extremely proud to tell you about the work of the farm advisory project that has been engaging directly with farmers across a number of catchments in West Wales.

This project took a hands on approach to improving water quality by offering advice and financial support to farmers. We hope the project will exemplify how effective improvements can be made to water quality through direct contact with farms. This joint project with Afonydd Cymru (Welsh Rivers Trust) and Dwr Cymru Welsh Water has been modelled on the successful work delivered by the farm team of the Wye and Usk Foundation, bringing together pragmatic and cost-effective actions to achieve improvements to water quality. The Final Project Report can be viewed:

The catchment advisers who worked on this project undertook free and confidential farm visits. They aimed to advise on workable solutions and where possible offered grant funding (subject to availability) and support with fencing and alternative water for stock, managing run-off from yards, soil structure assessments and the production of run-off risk maps.

It is hoped that further farm advisory projects will be possible across the river catchments of West Wales in the future and efforts are being made to secure funding that will support the delivery of this important work.
